Bone Cancer

Overview

A rapid growth of cells when forms a mass and occurs in any bone of the body causes bone cancer. Bone cancer is a rare type of cancer which is found in adults. There are two types of bone cancer primary and secondary. Primary bone cancer starts within the bone itself while secondary bone cancer starts from a body part and gradually spread to the bone of relevant part and is very common than primary bone cancer.

What is Bone Cancer?

When the cancer cells starts multiplication rapidly in any bone of the body then it causes Bone Cancer. Bone cancer can be diagnosed at different stages:

Stage 1: It is an early stage of cancer when it is detectable and does not spread much.

Stage 2: It does not spread but cause harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Stage 3: It is invasive in nature and can spread to the nearby bone.

Stage 4: It can spread to the nearby healthy bone tissues and organs like lungs and brain as well.

What are the types of Bone Cancer?

  • Knowing about the type of bone cancer is mandatory for us. Bone cancer is divided into different types which are broadly classified as:

Primary Bone cancer: these are the type which generates within the bone only. These are further classified as:

    • Osteosarcoma
    • Ewing Sarcoma
    • Chondrosarcoma

Osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma are the two most common types of bone cancers which are often found in children. Chondrosarcoma is often found in adults.

Secondary Bone Cancer or Metastases: When the cancer originates from the bone itself, it is known as secondary bone cancer.

What causes Bone Cancer?

Though the cause for bone cancer is unknown but there are few factors which detects the cause of bone cancer. While treating osteosarcoma radiation therapy is used. If the dose of radiation therapy is in high amount then it may help in regenerating the rapid growth of the cells during the treatment only within the bone.

What are the tests to diagnose Bone Cancer?

  • Blood Test
  • X-ray
  • CT-Scan
  • MRI
  • Biopsy
  • PET CT

The Procedure

Treatment of Bone Cancer depends on several factors which are as follows:

Radiation therapy:It is performed to kill cancerous cells from the bone.

Surgery:In this, the tumours from the affected bone will be removed surgically at an early stage so as to stop the rapid and gradual growth of the same.
